The Bloody Kate
Bender living history performance presented by Michelle Martin will be held on
Thursday, October 17th at 7:00pm at the Independence Public Library. A
self-proclaimed healer and psychic, Kate distributed flyers advertising her
supernatural powers and her ability to cure illnesses. She also conducted
séances and gave lectures on spiritualism, gaining notoriety for advocating
free love. Kate Bender was part of the infamous Southeast Kansas "Bloody
Bender" family who murdered wealthy travelers that visited their inn.
Michelle Martin is an instructor of history, living historian and photographer. She created the company Discovering History to combine her passions of history, research, and living history.
